New Sheridan Hotel Receives Historic Preservation Award

Telluride, Colo., (June 8, 2009) - The talented team behind the New Sheridan Hotel’s ambitious remodel recently captured top honors from the Town of Telluride’s Historic and Architectural Review Commission (HARC) in its annual Preservation Awards program.

The $7 million project won the Rehabilitation and Restoration Award, which acknowledges the sensitive rehabilitation and restoration of a historic structure. Projects must adhere to the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation administered by the National Park Service. The award lauds a property that restores an old structure while maintaining its historic use. The new work accurately restored the defining characteristics of the building, its site and environment.

In this charming mountain town that scrumptiously adheres to its historic roots, the preservation award is surely the highest praise around.

“Constructed in 1895, The New Sheridan is considered Telluride’s keystone hotel,” said Eric Cummings, Telluride architectural consultant, who worked closely with the project team. “I was impressed by the amount of investment that the owners (NSAC/Leucadia National Corp.) put into the restoration of the hotel, as well as the quality of the work. It’s pretty rare for an old hotel like the New Sheridan.”

General Manager Raymond Farnsworth said The New Sheridan maintained a long-term commitment to the property’s historic integrity, architecture and ambience during the two-year renovation process.

“The renovation was a labor or love,” Farnsworth said. “This award reaffirms the integrity of the amazing design and construction team that brought this to plan to fruition.”

Originally constructed as the Sheridan Hotel in 1891 and rebuilt as the New Sheridan after being destroyed by fire in 1893, the property’s Victorian style architecture, classic ambiance, and historical significance were all top of mind for the 2008 renovation. The project, which involved months of planning, included a complete renovation of the guest rooms, a revamp of the lobby and expanded dining capacity.

Rounding out the four-star renovation team were Cooper, Roberts, Simonsen & Associates, Interior Construction Specialists, renowned interior designer Nina Campbell and Dan Velazquez, NSAC project manager and owner’s representative.

According to architect Cummings, the town’s historic planning commission is extremely conscientious in determining what projects get approved.

“It’s not unusual to submit a plan three or four times to get approval,” Cummings said. “With this project the approval process went fairly fast. I was ecstatic that the owners were willing to put in the resources that were needed.”

Cummings, who received similar honors for historic projects, said he finds this design genre intriguing.

“It’s not uncommon to uncover unusual features that help to explain how the original structure was built,” he explained. “It’s a flashback to another time and to a whole different thought process.”
